The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek begins in the scenic foothills between the Arun and Tamor river valleys. The journey to Pangpema - the base camp on the northwestern side of Mt. Kanchenjunga - offers all the dramatic scenery and variety that define trekking in Nepal. The trek begins in the balmy, vegetated lowlands, gradually ascending through terraced hillsides toward the snow-clad peaks that float among the clouds. For the first few days, you travel through vast landscapes that echo the poetic descriptions of mountaineer Frank Smythe - remote, majestic, and almost overwhelming beyond the rugged horizon. This lower region is mainly inhabited by the Rai and Limbu people, whose neat thatched houses, with ochre and whitewashed walls, add a human touch to the scenery. The hillsides are beautifully terraced with rice, millet, and sweetcorn. In autumn, the villages are painted with vibrant colors from blooming bougainvillea and poinsettia, enhancing an already stunning landscape.
Midway between the Bhotiya settlements of Phole and Ghunsa, you begin to sense the approach of the high Himalayas. But it’s only after trekking beyond Ghunsa - nearly to Khambachen, the last inhabited village - that the true grandeur of the great peaks is fully revealed. The first major peak to dominate the skyline is Mt. Janu Himal (Kumbhakarna), a breathtaking example of mountain architecture, flanked by elegant, ice-fluted neighbors. Continuing beyond Khambachen, the trail curves northeastward beneath the massive ice wall of Khangbachen, then past Chang Himal (Wedge Peak). Finally, you arrive at Pangpema, where the mighty northwest face of Kanchenjunga rises before you in all its awe-inspiring glory.
