Trip Overview

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek is beginning in the foothill country between the valley of the Arun and Tamor River, the trek to the base camp area of Pangpema, on the north-west side of Kanchenjunga, provides all the scenic drama and variety that symbolize the trekking experiences in Nepal. You being in balmy warmth among vegetated hills, and make steady progress towards distant snows that hang among clouds. For a few days in immense landscapes hinted at by Smythe seem almost overwhelming on the far side of that ragged horizon. This foothill country is mostly inhabited Rai, Limbu, and their neat thatched house with ochre and white walls providing the human dimension, while hillside after hillside has been immaculately terraced with crops of rice, millet, or sweetcorn. In the autumn bougain village and poinsettia add their brilliant colures to an already extra vagrantly colorful landscape.

Mid-way between the Bhotiya settlements of Phole and Ghunsa one senses that big mountains are not so far away, but you have to trek beyond Ghunsa-almost as far as Khamgbachen, the last inhabited village-before the full dramatic glory of the major Himalayan peaks is revealed. The first of real stature is Janu (Kumbhakarna) an amazing piece of mountain architecture flanked by graceful ice-fluted neighbuors. Continuing beyond Khambachen the valley makes a long sweeping curve to the north-east, passing below the huge iced wall of Khangbachen, followed by Chang Himal (wedge peak) before at last you are able to gaze directly onto the Northwest face of Kanchenjunga itself.
