Upper Dolpo is challenging trekking being very remote with many 5000 metres passes, and can throw additional challenges if there is snow. Ensure you are trekking fit and bring a sense of adventure!
Upper Dolpo is a kaleidoscope of colours and textures, sculpted gorges and ochre gompas, yak herders and villages blended perfectly into the sacred landscape. Our comprehensive trek route is simply glorious trekking, and vying for the most scenic trek in Nepal and is a total trekking experience. One of the highest inhabited realms on the planet, Dolpo is also still a stronghold of the pre-Buddhist, shamanistic Bon-po religion as well as Tibetan Buddhism. It is a rugged, mountainous region of fortified villages, some with their own dzong or fort, turquoise lakes, revered mountains and breathless high passes.
Our trek begins with a spectacular flight along the Himalayan range to Juphal. We head up the Suligad River gorge to Phoksundo Lake and cross our first over 5000 meter pass leading to sacred Shey Gompa and Shelri, or Crystal Mountain. From Saldang we head into ever more remote regions of Dolpo, Khoma, Shimen and Tinkyu in the fantastic Panzang/Panjyan Valley. Pure Dolpo and few other trekkers. The trails connecting these remote villages and high passes are some of the most culturally interesting and spectacular routes in Dolpo, and the inhabitants still trade with Tibet along the old salt routes.
