Discover the Spiritual Heart of Mustang: Lo Manthang & Luri Gompa Trek
Embark on an extraordinary journey through the mystical landscapes of Upper Mustang, where time-honored traditions and ancient spirituality breathe life into the walled city of Lo Manthang. Deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, Lo Manthang is adorned with vibrant chhortens, mani walls, fluttering prayer flags, and centuries-old monasteries—all echoing the profound religious devotion of the Loba people. Devotees here follow the Sakya-pa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which evolved from earlier Bon practices and the Nyingma-pa tradition. At the heart of Lo Manthang stands the Jhampa Gompa, the oldest monastery in the city, built in 1387 AD during the reign of King Anguin Sangbo. Believed to mirror the revered Ghangtse Jhampa Gompa of Tibet, this sacred site is a testament to the region’s deep spiritual heritage.
Venturing beyond the city walls, the journey leads to the awe-inspiring Luri Cave Monastery, perched on a sandstone cliff nearly 100 meters above the ground. Dating back to the 14th century, this hidden sanctuary holds intricate mural paintings of Mahasiddhas—enlightened saints who achieved spiritual mastery—and stands as one of the most sacred sites in the entire Mustang region. Located in western Nepal, the Mustang District is a remote Himalayan region along the Kali Gandaki River, divided into the culturally rich Upper Mustang and the picturesque Lower Mustang. Our trek begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. Along the trail, we pass through ancient villages such as Chele, Geling, and Charang, each rich in Tibetan influence and traditional architecture.
In Lo Manthang, we explore sacred monasteries and the 15th-century Tashi Gephel Palace, once home to the first King of Mustang, Ame Pal. We take an extra day to explore the Chosar Valley, known for its remarkable sky caves carved into sheer cliffs. Continuing the trek, we journey to Yara and the mystical Luri Gompa, then follow a unique route to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath by road drive via Kagbeni. The trek concludes in Muktinath, leaving you with memories of Mustang’s untouched beauty, spiritual richness, and timeless heritage.
