Trip Overview

Damodar Kunda is located in the Upper Mustang region of the Annapurna area, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for trekkers. Situated north of the shadowed high Himalayas of the Annapurna massif and east of Upper Mustang (Lo Manthang), Damodar Kunda is a small lake at an elevation of 5,140 meters. The area is known for its cold and windy climate.
The trek to Damodar Kunda offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire Annapurna range, lush valleys, stunning landscapes, and ancient Tibetan monasteries. The views are especially impressive from higher vantage points just a short climb above the lake. To the north, you can see the Tibetan Plateau and the Damodar Himal, which boasts 65 peaks in its range. To the south lies the majestic Annapurna Himalayan massif.

Damodar Kunda holds great historical and religious significance. According to the Barah Purana, Lord Krishna declared that anyone who visits this sacred lake and takes a dip in its waters will be freed from all sins. The Purana also tells the story of two sons of Kubera, who suffered the consequences of misdeeds from a previous life. After bathing in Damodar Kunda, they were instantly absolved of their sins. We recommend visiting Damodar Kunda during the full moon in August, when a major festival is celebrated. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visit the lake during this time. The best months to visit are from April to September, with the festival period being a particularly vibrant time to go.

The Damodar Kunda trek begins and ends in Kagbeni and can be extended to include a visit to the famous pilgrimage site of Muktinath. From there, you can either trek or drive back to Jomsom, and the following day take a flight or travel by jeep or bus to return to Pokhara, then continue on to Kathmandu.
