Trip Overview

Damodar Kunda is located in the Upper Mustang region of the Annapurna area, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for trekkers. It lies to the north of the shadowed high Himalayas of the Annapurna massif and to the east of Upper Mustang (Lo Manthang), at an elevation of 5,140 meters. The area is known for its cold and windy conditions. The Damodar Kunda trek offers stunning panoramic views of the entire Annapurna range, lush valleys, beautiful landscapes, and Tibetan monasteries. Some of the best views can be enjoyed from vantage points slightly higher than the lake, reached by a short climb up nearby hills. To the north, you’ll see the Tibetan Plateau and the Damodar Himal, which features 65 peaks; to the south, the Annapurna massif dominates the landscape.

Damodar Kunda also holds significant religious importance. According to the Barah Purana, Lord Krishna declared that anyone who visits this sacred lake and takes a dip will be freed from all their sins. The Purana also recounts the story of two sons of Kubera, who suffered due to misdeeds in a previous life. Lord Krishna instructed them to bathe in Damodar Kunda, and upon doing so, they were immediately absolved of their sins. We recommend visiting Damodar Kunda during the full moon in August, when a major festival is held. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims travel to the lake during this time. The best months to visit are from April to September, with the festival period being a particularly vibrant and special time.

The Damodar Kunda trek starts and ends in Kagbeni. It can be extended to include a visit to the famous pilgrimage site of Muktinath, after which you can drive back to the following day to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu.
