Trip Overview

The Hidden Gem of Helambu

The Ama Yangri Trek is a newly introduced yet profoundly rewarding trekking route nestled in the Helambu region of Nepal. Just 80 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, this serene trail offers a pristine Himalayan experience without the crowds—making it a perfect off-the-beaten-path adventure. Often dubbed the "Poon Hill of the Kathmandu Valley," Ama Yangri provides panoramic views that rival those of more popular treks, with the added benefit of tranquility and cultural richness. At an elevation of 3,771 meters, Ama Yangri is the highest trekking point around the Kathmandu Valley and holds deep spiritual significance. Locals regard the peak as the manifestation of Ama Yangri Devi, the guardian deity of the Helambu area. Every year on the full moon of Chaitra, hundreds of Hyolmo (Yolmo) pilgrims and travelers climb to the summit before sunrise to offer prayers and witness the first golden rays touch the Himalayas—an unforgettable spiritual and visual experience.

The trail winds through charming Sherpa, Tamang, and Chhetri villages and passes lush forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine, offering a journey rich in natural beauty and cultural immersion. This trek forms part of the greater Helambu Circuit, often referred to as the "Hyolmo Heritage Trail." The region is home to the Hyolmo people, whose language, dress, and traditions differ from Sherpas of Khumbu or Rolwaling, offering a unique anthropological and cultural experience. Despite its relatively low elevation compared to other Himalayan treks, Ama Yangri rewards trekkers with jaw-dropping views of the Langtang range, Manaslu, Annapurna, Ganesh Himal, and even Mount Everest on clear days. The area is also renowned for its Thanka art and Buddhist heritage, adding layers of spiritual and artistic significance to your journey.
