Your journey begins with an early morning drive from Kathmandu, passing through picturesque hills, terraced farmlands, and traditional Nepalese villages on the way to the Nepal–Tibet border (approximately 8 hours). After completing immigration and customs procedures, you will cross into Tibet and meet your experienced Tibetan guide. From the border, a short scenic drive uphill leads to Kyirung, a charming Tibetan town nestled amidst stunning mountain landscapes. Upon arrival, settle into a comfortable local guesthouse and enjoy your first evening on the Tibetan Plateau, preparing for the spiritual adventure ahead. Overnight stay in Kyirung.
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, an essential step in preparing your body for the higher elevations you will encounter during the pilgrimage. Taking time to adjust to the altitude helps reduce the risk of altitude-related discomfort and ensures a safer, more enjoyable journey ahead. Spend the day relaxing, taking short walks around Kyirung, and exploring the town's beautiful surroundings at a gentle pace. Use this opportunity to rest, stay hydrated, and prepare both physically and mentally for the sacred Mount Kailash adventure. Overnight stay in Kyirung.
Today’s journey takes you deeper into the vast landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau, offering some of the most spectacular scenery of the entire pilgrimage. As you travel toward Saga, the road ascends over the magnificent Lalung La Pass (5,200m), where breathtaking panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and endless high-altitude plains unfold before you. Along the route, you'll witness the stunning turquoise waters of Peiku Tso Lake, one of Tibet’s most beautiful alpine lakes, with the towering summit of Shishapangma (8,027m) rising majestically in the distance. Following ancient trade routes near the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra River, you'll travel through an ever-changing landscape of mountains, lakes, and open grasslands. After covering approximately 295 kilometers, arrive in Saga for an overnight stay in a comfortable hotel, ready for the next stage of your Mount Kailash pilgrimage.
Spend the morning continuing your exploration along the serene shores of the sacred Lake Manasarovar, where the water’s deep blue and turquoise hues shift beautifully with the changing light. This is a place steeped in spiritual significance, surrounded by ancient myths, meditation caves, and revered pilgrimage traditions that have drawn seekers for centuries. The peaceful environment offers time for reflection, prayer, and quiet appreciation of the lake’s profound energy.
In the afternoon, take a short drive of approximately one hour (30 km) to reach Darchen, the small but important settlement that serves as the base for the Mount Kailash Kora. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation at Chu Gumba, where you will rest and complete final preparations for the upcoming trek. Use the evening to organize your gear, acclimatize further, and mentally prepare for the sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash.
After breakfast, your sacred trek around Mount Kailash begins. You will meet your support team—guides, porters, and yaks—who will accompany you through the most spiritually significant part of the journey. The trail gradually ascends through lush meadows and follows the gentle flow of streams as you enter the beautiful Lha Chu Valley, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and pristine alpine landscapes.
As you progress, the majestic north face of Mount Kailash comes into full view, an awe-inspiring sight that holds deep spiritual meaning for pilgrims of multiple faiths. The valley’s turquoise waters and rugged terrain create a powerful atmosphere of solitude and reverence, enhancing the sense of pilgrimage.
By late afternoon, you arrive at the sacred 13th-century Dirapuk Monastery, a deeply spiritual resting place situated directly beneath the towering north face of Mount Kailash. Spend the evening absorbing the stillness and spiritual energy of the surroundings. Overnight stay will be in a nearby guesthouse or camp, resting for the challenging day ahead.
Today is the most demanding yet deeply rewarding stage of the entire pilgrimage. After an early start, you begin a steady and challenging ascent toward the legendary Drolma La Pass (5,630m), the highest point of the Mount Kailash Kora. The trail is lined with prayer flags fluttering in the high-altitude wind, symbolizing blessings and prayers carried across the mountains.
As you push through the thin air and rugged terrain, the effort is profoundly rewarded by breathtaking views from the summit. Here, pilgrims often pause for reflection, gratitude, and a symbolic moment of completion before beginning the descent. Nearby lies the sacred glacial waters of Thukpe Dzingbu Lake, revered for its spiritual significance and serene beauty.
After a heartfelt pause at the pass, you descend into the tranquil Zutulpuk valley (4790 m), a place known for its peaceful landscapes and ancient meditation caves. This area is closely associated with the great Tibetan yogi Milarepa, who is said to have meditated in these caves during his spiritual practice.
By late afternoon, arrive at a simple guesthouse in the valley for an overnight stay, resting after completing the most sacred and physically demanding section of the Kora.
After breakfast, you begin the final leg of your journey through the vast landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. You cross the mighty Yarlung Tsangpo River (Brahmaputra River) by ferry, experiencing one last moment of the region’s raw natural grandeur before continuing your drive toward the Nepal border.
The road soon opens into wide, flat plains that stretch endlessly across the horizon, offering a final glimpse of Tibet’s serene and expansive beauty. As you travel approximately 250 km, the scenery gradually shifts from open high-altitude valleys to greener, more rugged terrain as you approach Kyirung.
Upon arrival in Kyirung, you settle in for your final overnight stay in Tibet. This is a time to rest and reflect on the transformative pilgrimage you have completed around sacred Mount Kailash, before continuing onward to the Nepal–Tibet border the next day.
