Yala Peak is a practical and accessible climbing peak in the Langtang region, north of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Situated near the Tibetan border and aligned with a ridge of towering mountains, Yala Peak is often combined with the beautiful Langtang Valley Trek. This trip is both scenic and rewarding, offering panoramic Himalayan views and an enriching trekking experience. From the summit of Yala Peak, climbers are treated to stunning views of the Manaslu range and iconic peaks such as Langtang Lirung (7,234m), Lenpo Gang (7,083m), Dorje Lakpa (6,990m), Ganesh Himal, and Naya Kanga on the Nepal side. Toward Tibet, you’ll see Gangchempo (6,388m) and the mighty Shishapangma (8,013m) the only 8,000-meter peak entirely within Tibet.
The Yala Peak expedition passes through Langtang National Park, known for its rich biodiversity, natural beauty, and dramatic landscapes. Along the trail, trekkers may encounter blooming red rhododendrons and, with luck, rare wildlife such as the Snow Leopard or Red Panda. The Langtang Valley itself is renowned as one of the most picturesque in the world. Before the ascent, climbers usually acclimatize at Kyangjin Monastery (3,870m) a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site. Hiking around the surrounding highlands helps with altitude adjustment. The base camp is located at Yala Kharka (4,600m), a yak grazing meadow. Here, the climbing guide provides important information on the route, gear usage, and technical aspects of the climb.
The adventure begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Bensi, followed by several days of trekking through forests and traditional villages. Upon reaching Kyangjin Gompa, located at the base of Langtang Lirung, trekkers take a rest day to explore the Langshisa Glacier and local monasteries. A base camp is then established at 4,600m, where climbers receive training on how to use crampons, ice axes, and ropes. The summit attempt is made the following day. After a successful ascent, the group returns to Syabrubesi and drives back to Kathmandu, completing an unforgettable Himalayan experience.
