It was first ascent by the Brazilians Marcelo Rey Belo and Juliana N. Bechara Belo with several Sherpas on May 19, 2003. The ascent route led over the northwest ridge.

Phari Lapcha Peak rises from yak pastures above the village in a uniform slope to the final summit pyramid which is an undistinguished snow and ice slope. Phari Lapcha itself has two summits and the East Summit (5,977m.) is slightly lower than the main top. Phari Lapcha is sometimes confused with Dawa Peak (5,920 m) to the north-west of the main summits, and has been called Phari Lapcha West though it is arguably an entirely separate peak.
