Trip Overview

Makalu Base Camp and Sherpani Pass Trail is an outstanding trek in eastern Nepal, offering a rare combination of rich cultural heritage, unspoiled natural beauty, and exceptional biological diversity. This adventurous route takes you from the steamy lowlands of Tumlingtar, along the Arun River, through one of Nepal’s most remote and least-visited regions, all the way to the base camp of Mt. Makalu (8,485m)—the world’s fifth-highest mountain.

The trail follows the scenic Barun River Valley inside the Makalu Barun National Park, a protected area rich in rare flora and fauna. Along the way, you’ll cross the Shipton Pass (4,127m) before reaching Makalu Base Camp (4,870m). From the base camp, trekkers are rewarded with awe-inspiring views of Makalu’s south face, as well as distant but majestic panoramas of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse—a truly regal sight.

The Arun Valley is also home to several rare bird species, making this trek a treat for both nature lovers and adventure seekers. While the route is physically demanding, trekkers who are in good shape and have previous high-altitude trekking experience will find it a highly rewarding challenge. The best time to undertake this trek is from March to May and September to early December, when the weather is generally clear and stable, offering the best mountain views and trail conditions.
