A truly magnificent Himalayan tea house trek crossing the Shipton La to reach the foot of the world's fifth highest mountain.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a truly spectacular Himalayan teahouse journey, crossing the high Shipton La Pass to reach the foot of the world’s fifth-highest mountain, Mount Makalu (8,485m). This remote and less-traveled route showcases some of the best that Nepal has to offer: peaceful trails, vibrant terraced farmlands, traditional mountain cultures, lush rhododendron forests, rare wildlife, and breathtaking views of several 8,000-meter-plus peaks. Designed for experienced trekkers seeking a real challenge, this trek delivers incredible rewards in terms of scenery, solitude, and cultural immersion.
The adventure begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar in eastern Nepal, followed by a bumpy 3.5-hour drive to the trek's starting point. From there, the trail follows the Arun River valley to Seduwa and Num, then ascends over the Shipton La Pass (4210m) into the upper Barun Valley, offering dramatic close-up views of Makalu and Chamlang Himal. This trek ventures into one of Nepal’s most remote and least-visited regions. The Barun Valley is part of a vast transboundary protected area jointly managed by Nepal and China, encompassing 2330 sq. km of National Park and 830 sq. km of Conservation Area on the Nepal side alone. The Makalu Base Camp Trek typically spans 21 days and is considered one of Nepal’s more demanding treks. Even seasoned hikers who have completed Everest Base Camp often find Makalu tougher due to its rugged terrain, steep stone steps, narrow trails, snow-covered passes, and occasional landslip zones.
Despite the challenges, this trek is a favorite among solitary and wilderness trekkers, offering a rare chance to explore untouched Himalayan landscapes and high-altitude environments. Accommodations are basic but welcoming—authentic mountain teahouses where you can enjoy hot, hearty meals, warm soups, and comforting cups of Masala tea. The trail winds through deeply spiritual Buddhist regions, adorned with Manes (stone prayer walls) and fluttering Buddhist prayer flags that add a peaceful, sacred atmosphere—especially during high mountain crossings.
