Trip Overview

Makalu Salpa Pass trek begins in Tumlingtar and follows the Arun River before turning into the Irkhu Khola Valley, an area renowned for its traditional natural paper products. The Salpa Pass trail offers a marvelous way to enter the Everest region, following the unique ecosystem of the Arun Valley. This trekking route was once an ancient trade path used by local people to transport agricultural goods to Namche Bazar and even to Tibet via the Nangpa La. The trail leads us through the Arun Valley to the Salpa Pass and the sacred Salpa Pokhari Lake. Along the way, friendly villagers and beautiful waterfalls guide us toward the second pass of the trek — Surkie La. The region is mainly inhabited by the Rai people, while Sherpa communities have settled in remote, picturesque villages.

The highest point of the trek is Salpa Bhanjyang at 3,800 meters, with the highest campsite located at Salpa Kharka at 3,600 meters. This trek is relatively easy and offers breathtaking views of Makalu, Mera Peak, the Everest range, and many other high peaks rising above rice paddies and lush forests. Anyone in good physical condition with previous trekking experience can undertake this moderately challenging journey. The best seasons for the trek are from March to May and from September to early December.
