Loh-La Everest West Side Trekking – 24 Days

This is a pioneering high altitude trekking to the crest of the Lho-La pass, right on the remote border of Tibet and Nepal.

The efforts, and lightweight style final approach, is well rewarded by spectacular views into the Western Camp, across the great Northern Walls Mt Nuptse, and directly into the moving "Ice River" of the Khumbu Icefall across the border. The Lhotse face and South west face are seen from here too. This trek affords perspectives of Mt. Everest which have only been the domain of mountaineers in the past, due to access being available only by a mountaineering permit.

Loh La trekking route followed takes the trail to the North Side of Everest, but continues past the East Rongbuk Glacier to the site of Tilman’s 1938 "Lake Camp", (west side base camp today) continuing to the site of his old North Face Camp at around 19,000ft before breaking out across the glacier under Everest’s West Ridge to the vantage point of the Lho-La. This is where in 1922 George Mallory stood and pronounced the Khumbu Icefall as ‘un climbable’. His legacy here was to name the hanging glacier above the ice fall, the Western Cwm, as a fond memory of his welsh climbs back home in UK.

For many adventurous people, the Lho-La is a more prized (and achievable) goal than the summit of Everest itself due to its historical importance, remoteness, and its unspoilt and pristine condition as an objective; all this without the inherent risks and dangers associated with higher altitude. The journey begins with an acclimatization phase in the Kathmandu Valley, before flying to Lhasa and visiting the Potala Palace, the Norbulingka and other Lhasa sites before crossing in 4 x4 vehicles the Tibetan Plateau to the monasteries and forts of Gyantse, Shigatse and Shegar.

OUTLINE ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu airport, meet our staff then transfer to Hotel.
Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing: Swayambhunath, Bouddhanath, Pashupatinath temple & Patan Durbar square. Evening will be briefing for tours to Tibet.
Day 03: Fly to Lhasa, meet our staff then transfer to Hotel.
Day 04-05: Sightseeing in Lhasa.
Day 06: Drive Lhasa – Gyantse.
Day 07: Gyantse to Shigatse.
Day 08: Shigatse to Xegar
Day 09: Xegar to Everest Base Camp (5200m.)
Day 10: At Base Camp (5200m.)
Day 11-12: Everest Base Camp trek
Day 13: Trek to West Base Camp
Day 14: Rest day at West Base Camp
Day 15: Trek to lightweight Camp 1
Day 16: Trek to lightweight Camp 2
Day 17: Cross Loh-La and return to Camp 1 or 2
Day 18: Return to West Base Camp
Day 19: Trek back to Base Camp
Day 20: Drive to Nyalam and transfer to Hotel.
Day 21: Spare day for trip.
Day 22: Nyalam – Kathmandu by drive then transfer to Hotel.
Day 23: Kathmandu free.
Day 24: last minute, transfer to airport for onward journey.

Mode of transport we provide while on Tibet for tours and trekking.

• 2 Person = 1 Land Cruiser.
• 3 – 4 Person = 1 Land Cruiser and 1 support Land Cruiser or mini truck.
• 5 – 8 Person 2 = Land Cruiser and 1 support truck.
• 13 – 15 Person = 4 Land Cruiser and 1 support truck.
• 16 – 20 Person = Above 5 Land Cruiser and 1 support truck.
• 20 Person = Above 5 land cruiser and 2 support truck.

Note:

1. We need a name list of each member 60 days before the trip confirmation for flight reservation.
2. Clear passport photocopy and a passport size photo of each member which should reach us 30 days before client's arrival in Kathmandu at info@culturaltreks.com (jpeg or gif reduced to max. 25Kb per photo).
3. If you wish to join tours or trekking in Kathmandu you have to arrive as per the given programs and if you wish join in Lhasa can also possible.
4. If you are traveling in Nepal before going to Tibet, then you must apply for your Chinese visa in Kathmandu. We can get it within 2 days with your original passport.
