General Information
Nepal is blessed with some of the wildest and most spectacular rivers in the world. The combination of beautiful mountain scenery, exhilarating white water rapids and fascinating cultural opportunities make Nepal one of the premier places to go white water rafting. Cultural Treks & Expedition offers fun and exciting rafting trips on the best rivers in Nepal. The best time for rafting in Nepal is usually September or early December and March to June. This is when the weather is best and the water is the warmest. Fishing and swimming are additional adventures that you can enjoy during the rafting trip. We love the wilderness of Nepal and wish to share it with all our participants. It is our commitment to provide an exciting, fun and adventurous experience in an un-compromised safe environment. Through rafting we hope to create unforgettable experiences and make dreams come true.
River Grades
White water rivers (and the rapids on them) have an internationally recognized grading scale. The scale is as follows:
Grade I – Flat water, no rapids, ‘barely a splash’
Grade II – Bubbling current, small roller-coaster rapids
Grade III – Needs trained guide – technical & exciting
Grade IV – Seriously big rapids, unforgiving, exhilarating
Grade V – The hair raising limit
Grade VI – Unrunnable –“don’t go for it” – portage around
Days on the river
What to expect from a well-paced trip
Days shouldn’t be rushed – morning tea, breakfast until 9:30 A.M. or so when all equipment’s is stowed on the rafts and another days whitewater begins. A nice beach for lunch around 12:30 P.M. and night’s camp is pitched about 4:00 P.M. in all about 5 ½ -6 hrs. Rafting each day.
The water & the weather
All the best whitewater in Nepal exists at an altitude between 1,200 meter (4,000 ft.) and 600 meter (2,000 ft.), a subtropical region lower than Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Post Monsoon – mid September to late November
High water rivers at their maximum grades especially until mid – October then monsoon “run-off” changes to thaw and glacial melt. Hot or warm temperatures with any rain ending by late September; sunny days, warm nights but woolly sweaters, etc. as winter takes hold.
Winter – early December to mid- March
The Nepal whitewater experience is still a warmer and sunnier one than in many parts of the world but there are longer shadows in the deep river valleys and a warmer sleeping bag is advised. Wetsuits may be needed.
Spring/Summer – late March to early June
The clear, still powerful rivers driven by spring snow melt are, on average, reduced by one grade less than their high-water maximum. The Karnali and Kali Gandaki, perfectly suited to this season, are great ‘all comers’ rivers.
Monsoon – mid-June to early September
The rivers are full and the few raft trips that are operated are limited to overnight programs on the Trishuli and Seti.
What to take / Not to take
An individual cloth gear bag and a large waterproof ‘dry bag’ (for 2 people) should be supplied. Sleeping bag rental is easy and inexpensive in both Kathmandu and Pokhara.
