Nirekha Peak (6169m.) Climbing
An magnificent treks to the Gokyo Lakes, including an ascent of Gokyo Ri, Nirekha Peak climbing, Chola Pass, Kalapattar offering superb views of Everest
One of the great summits in the
heart of the Khumbu region in Nepal.
The peak is located in the same chain as the Lobuche summits, just East of the
Cho La Col (not to be confused
with the famous Cho La pass that is only a few hundred meters away). The peak
is in the list of the new 'A' trekking peaks, for which currently (2006) a peak
fee of $500 has to be paid. The normal ascent to the Nirekha
Peak is a great and - depending on
the conditions - difficult climb. Only experienced climbers should attempt this
route, though it is partially saved with fixed ropes. The summit consists of
two summit pyramids.
It is unclear which one is higher. Clearly the North
summit is easier, but requires crossing a difficult crevasse, while the South
summit requires one pitch in steep (50°) ice. An early morning ascent of Gokyo
Ri (5360m.) and Nirekha
Peak allow to see highpoint of the
trek and we are rewarded by an amazing 360° view of the region's 8000m peaks. The trips rejoin the classic route to Everest
Case Camp used by all the great climbing parties when attempting the peak from
the Nepalese side. The Kanchung Base Camp is the preferable starting point,
from the lake camp it is hardly doable in one day. Both ascents are scenically
beautiful.
There is ample time for acclimatization, and at the higher altitudes we are able to get well away from the most trekked areas.
